Isaiah 49:2 …in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft: in his quiver hath he hid me.
NIV: “…in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.”
Every child surely is thrilled with the heroics of a Superman, Spiderman, the Lone Ranger, or any other character who comes flying in at the most dangerous moment and saves victims from the evil one. The rescuer arrives only a second before the tortured one is to be devoured, dumped over the edge of a cliff, or squished by a giant foot. The best one to me is Superman because other than when he’s rescuing someone he’s such a clumsy journalist getting in the way more than he’s helping. (I can identify with that!) He wants so much to help but he can’t–not unless he goes into his secret mode.
Have you ever thought when you read from Isaiah that Israel, and then you, are God’s secret weapon? Yes, the God Who created the universe and died on the cross for you–that God! He’s hidden you in the shadow of His hand. He’s polished you until you shine like silver (or he wants to!). And He wants you to be ready at any moment when He needs to pull you out of His quiver and use you. For what? To display His splendor!
There is a conversation in Isaiah 49 between Israel and God, Israel saying that he’s not really good for anything, God saying that He formed him (Israel) to bring His people back to Him. And then He says this most wonderful thing, wonderful for all of us who are not part of His original Chosen people. He says “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob…I will also make you a light for the Gentiles…”
Concealed in the Lord’s quiver, hidden in His hand, polished to a brilliant sheen, you are ready for Him to use to do His marvelous work! It may be your mouth He uses as His arrow, it may be your gift of discernment, your gift of compassion, or generosity or hospitality. Any of your gifts and talents can become part of His plan and you will be right in the middle of the action–making His glory known!
I can’t think of anything more exciting than being hidden in God’s quiver to be pulled out just at the perfect time–in the beauty shop, talking to a client, checking out of a busy store–wherever one of those for whom God died is in need. You are God’s secret weapon! Don’t allow yourself to become rusty. God to Him regularly for more polishing!
Thank You, Lord, for hiding me in Your quiver. Please keep my point keen and use me for Your Name’s sake.
